The state "crowded-out" civil society because civil society simply wasn't up to the task.
And the "hyper-individualist" ethos that they're complaining about is the result of neo-liberal capitalism destroying community and turning people into rootless, atomized, precarious workers/consumers.
I don't know which is more infuriating; the know-nothings or the think-they-know-somethings.
